Meta Description Length Checker
Count what readers perceive, estimate rendered width, inspect two device mockups, and improve a description without uploading the draft.
ⓘGoogle has no fixed meta-description length limit. Snippets are query- and device-dependent, may be cut to fit, and may come from page content instead of this tag. The previews below are editorial estimates.
Draft and page context
Paste one proposed meta description. Display whitespace is collapsed for analysis. Hard local limit: 5,000 UTF-16 code units.
What the length signals mean
A character count is repeatable, but it is not a Google rule. “WWW” and “iii” occupy different widths, combining marks can form one perceived character, and emoji may contain several code points. This checker therefore reports entered UTF-16 units, displayed grapheme clusters, words, and an estimated browser-canvas width.
The desktop and mobile cards model 14px Arial-like text within declared line widths. A “fits mockup” label means only that the cleaned draft fits those local assumptions. Search can use another font, width, number of lines, date, bold query terms, experiment, or entirely different page text.
How to review a meta description
- Summarize the specific page accurately, not the whole site.
- Front-load the subject and differentiating fact so useful meaning survives a shorter snippet.
- Prefer natural, human-readable copy over repeated keyword variants or a bare list.
- Include concrete details that help a searcher decide whether the page answers the need.
- Review the escaped tag, publish it once in the page head, then inspect actual Search behavior over time.
Google guidance, without a mythical fixed limit
Google says there is no limit on the length of a meta description, while displayed snippets are truncated as needed to fit device width. It primarily creates snippets from page content and sometimes uses the meta description when that is more accurate. Snippets can differ by query.
Google also recommends unique, descriptive, page-specific, human-readable summaries and warns against long strings of keywords. For large sites, accurate programmatic descriptions can be appropriate. Read Google’s snippet guidance.
HTML, whitespace, and Unicode
The HTML description metadata value is a free-form string. This tool collapses runs of display whitespace for the copy-ready version and escapes &, quotes, apostrophes, and angle brackets in the attribute. It does not treat entered HTML as markup.
Where supported, Intl.Segmenter counts user-perceived grapheme clusters and words. Otherwise, the tool falls back to Unicode code points and letter/number tokens and labels that fallback. Language-specific word boundaries and emoji rendering still vary.
Limits and privacy
- The description is capped at 5,000 UTF-16 code units, the preview title at 200, display URL at 300, and optional phrase at 120.
- The checker cannot verify relevance, truthfulness, uniqueness across pages, published markup, robots settings, indexing, ranking, click-through rate, or whether Google uses the tag.
- No page is fetched and no text leaves this browser tab. Reset or navigation discards the draft.
